Vega Sport Protein Powder Review – Perfect or Overrated?

This is the ultimate Vega sport protein powder review. Is this popular plant-based protein powder this perfect or is it overhyped?

Protein powder is an essential part of your diet, especially if you lift weights. There are numerous types of protein powders on the market, and this can make it difficult to pick the right one for your needs. This is why it’s important to choose a high-quality protein powder with great flavour.

As someone who consumes protein powder every day, I will give my 100% honest opinion on this Vega sport plant-based protein powder based on my experience, other people’s reviews, and my testing.

Without further ado, let’s get to the review.

Vega Sport Protein Powder Sizes

The Vega Sport plant-based Protein Powder comes in 3 different sizes:

  • Large (19-20 servings) 828g
  • Extra Large (45 servings) 1.98kg
  • Bottle of 12 single packs

One serving or scoop is 41 grams, which is a great value.

The Extra-large canister is the most popular size because it’s large enough to last for a few months but small enough that it won’t take up too much space in your kitchen cupboards.

The Large canister is perfect if you want to save money or if you have multiple people using the product at once (for example, if there are several family members who are working out).

However, the single packs are not worth the money, so I only recommend you choose this size if you’re just trying the protein powder out

Packaging

The matte black package design looks very premium and modern, but it is not exactly what I would call user-friendly.

The container itself is made from plastic, but it feels solid and well-built, so you don’t have to worry about it bursting open during transportation or storage. It also has a scoop that comes with it, which is always a good thing.

Pros

  • the design looks modern and feels solid
  • All the information about the product is shown in the tub

Cons

  • it’s easy to get powder on the lid

Vega Sport Plant-Based Protein Powder Flavours

The Vega sport protein powder comes in 5 different flavours:

  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Peanut Butter
  • Mocha
  • Berry

Currently, the most popular flavours are vanilla and chocolate. But as you can see, these flavours are pretty damn good, just the perfect amount of solid flavour choices

In this review, I’m going to use the vanilla flavour to test.

Vega Sport Protein Powder Ingredients

These are the ingredients listed on the vanilla flavour plant-based sport protein powder from the Vega website. The other flavours’ ingredients are almost identical, except for the natural flavours.

Pea protein, Pumpkin seed protein, Organic sunflower seed protein, Alfalfa protein, Tart cherry powder (tart cherry, maltodextrin), Natural Flavors, Stevia leaf extract, Sea Salt Xanthan gum

(May contain milk, soy, and eggs.)

Let’s break down the ingredients and I’ll explain what some of the elements do.

Vega Sport Plant-Based Protein Powder Ingredient Breakdown

Ingredient Breakdown
Pea protein, Pumpkin seed protein, Organic sunflower seed protein, Alfalfa proteinAll of them are a healthy blend of plant-based protein powders, great for muscle growth.
Tart cherry powdera proven ingredient to aid significantly in exercise recovery and reduce muscle pain.
Sea saltFor a little bit more electrolytes and enhance the flavour
Stevia leaf extractThe most natural zero-calorie sugar-free substitute.
Xanthan Gumused for thickening the texture and acts like a binder for easier mixing
Natural flavoursflavouring, in this case, vanilla.

As you can see, the ingredients are not bad at all, considering the amount of trash ingredients some protein powders have. Personally, I didn’t taste a hint of cherry in the vanilla protein powder, and that’s good.

Taste test

A good protein powder can have the best nutritional value and ingredients, but no one will want to consume it if the powder tastes like crap.

In the taste test, I mixed the protein powder into water, plant-based milk, yogurt, smoothies, and baking.

I’m happy to announce that the Vega sport protein powder not only tastes amazing, but it also has a rich, creamy taste, but not as dessert-like as some other protein powders. It is quite sweet though, especially when you just drink it with water or milk.

Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t like the taste of water – it’s so bland and sickly sweet. However, adding the powder to yogurt, smoothies and baked goods was absolute HEAVEN. Don’t worry, I’ll get into the texture and more on baking very soon in this article.

How well does the Vega Sport Protein Powder mix?

For this test, I mixed one scoop of the Vega sport protein powder into one and a half cups of ice-cold water, as the Vega website says.

However, to really put the mix-ability to the test, I tried using a spoon to mix it for the first test and a shaker cup for the second.

And I’ll be honest, the powder did not mix well. It took a while for it to dissolve and some powder sank at the bottom of the cup. Using milk was a little better, but the overall mixing experience was not the best.

How well does the Vega Sport Protein Powder Bake?

Baking and cooking with protein powder is a huge factor for me, considering this recipe blog is dedicated to healthy delicious high-protein sugar-free recipes.

This protein powder can be incorporated into baking incredibly well, and there are a couple of reasons why. First, the texture of your final product is still amazing. The colour doesn’t change when you cook it too, which happens in some other protein powders. Thirdly, the protein powder can act as a sugar-free sweetener as well.

Recipes to make with Vega Sport Protein Powder

Most recipes I make that need a sweet protein powder are Vega protein powders, and they create amazing desserts, for example, the 90-second Protein Earl Grey Mug Cake recipe and 3 ingredient protein pancakes recipes. Here are some more tasty things you can make with this protein powder:

Dietary Specifications

If you’re reading this, you probably value your health, like me. Well, good news! This protein powder not only is full of BCAAs, full of vitamins and minerals (as a protein powder should). The powder is vegan, sugar-free and gluten-free, and it’s also keto-friendly, with only 3 grams of net carbs. Of course, it has all the branch-chain amino acids a protein powder should have.

Did I mention it’s also gut-friendly? I can give my personal testimony on the gut health part, considering my horrible digestive system. Moreover, the protein powder also has 1 billion CFUs of probiotics, to support your gut health.

That being said, everyone is different and if you’re sensitive to stevia or xantham gum, this protein powder might not be for you. Instead, I will recommend Naked Nutrition protein powders, which the sole ingredient is pea protein.

Adding to that, the Vega protein powders are non-GMO verified and NSF certified Sport AND informed choice certified. So you can be confident on the trustworthiness of what they claim in their protein powders.

Price

Of course, one of the important factors when choosing a protein powder is the price and value.

In comparison to other protein powders, Vega Sport protein powder is considered relatively expensive. The price per serving of $1.99 for the smaller size is higher than the average price of most protein powders. However, it’s important to note that Vega Sport protein powder is plant-based, which may contribute to the higher price point.

What’s more, the extra large containers of Vega Sport Protein are the best value, so if you’re satisfied with this protein powder, I highly recommend choosing the largest size to save some money.

To sum up, the Vega Sport Protein Powder series is worth buying, considering its premium ingredients and all the factors mentioned in this article.

Is Vega Sport Protein Powder Good for Bodybuilding?

Yes, the Vega Sport Plant-Based Protein Powder is a good option for bodybuilding enthusiasts who follow a plant-based diet. As we saw above in the ingredients list, this protein powder offers a high-quality blend of plant-based protein sources, including pea protein, pumpkin seed protein, and sunflower seed protein.

These sources give all the essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth, making it an effective tool for building lean muscle mass. Additionally, Vega Sport Plant-Based Protein Powder is free from artificial additives, preservatives, and sweeteners, making it a clean and natural choice.

With its rich protein content and absence of animal-derived ingredients, this protein powder is suitable for individuals looking for a healthier lifestyle and people who are looking to meet their bodybuilding goals while adhering to a plant-based lifestyle.

What’s the Difference between Vega Sport Protein and Vega Sport Premium?

According to my research, both are very similar but the Vega Sport Premium has 2 billion CFUs of Bacillus Coagulans probiotics, has 2 more flavours (Mocha and Berry), and each tub size contains more servings (14 servings in the regular and 19-20 in the Premium one). However, the Premium one is of course, more expensive than the regular one.

In Canada, there is only the premium version of Vega Sport Plant-based Protein powder, but both the regular and premium version is available in the United States.

What’s the best time to drink Vega Sport Protein?

Vega has multiple series of protein powders made for different purposes. The Regular and Premium Sport protein powder is suitable to take at all times of the day, but since the product has tart cherry extract, it’s best to drink the protein powder after a workout for the best muscle recovery.

Is Vega Sport Protein Powder a Meal Replacement?

Although the Vega Sport Protein provides lots of nutritional value, this protein powder is meant for consumption more as a post-workout meal or snack than an actual meal replacement. However, the Vega All-In-One Protein powder can be used as a meal replacement.

What others say about this protein powder

Now that you’ve read my review, let’s take a look at what other consumers think about this product. All of these reviews are verified purchases from Amazon.

“Taste Ok rather use it for cooking, though feeling to be satiated is incredible compare to whey protein. It’s quality protein definitely.”

” Taste good and feels good, mixes alright as it is too fine because it’s pea protein like baby formula so it just flies everywhere and sticks to everything and doesn’t wash or mix as easily as the other types”

“Great taste by far. I use it with my overnight oats, and every morning is a delicious experience 🙂
My issues are insufficient protein for each scoop, and the powder is like dust. The last issue makes it hard to take it out of the container and use it without making a mess.”

” This stuff is pretty great, I cm think vanilla is the best because the flavour kind of blends into whatever you are combining the shake with and is fine to eat on its own. I think the pea protein is the best, doesn’t hurt my stomach, and good amount of protein.”

Conclusion

So as you can see, there are quite a few mixed responses, and at the end of the day, the taste and how the protein powder digests is different from one person to another.

You can explore the MyVega website to see which protein powder suits best for you – there are a lot of choices, sizes, and flavours for everyone.
